Occasionally, online chatbots such as ChatGPT from OpenAI and Gemini from Google encounter difficulties with rudimentary mathematical challenges. The computer code they produce tends to be flawed and incomplete, with instances where they even fabricate information.

However, on Thursday, OpenAI introduced an enhanced version of ChatGPT that aims to mitigate these shortcomings. According to the company, this chatbot, bolstered by the novel artificial intelligence technology known as OpenAI o1, is capable of "reasoning" through tasks encompassing mathematics, coding, and science.

“With previous models like ChatGPT, you ask them a question and they immediately start responding,” said Jakub Pachocki, OpenAI’s chief scientist. “This model can take its time. It can think through the problem — in English — and try to break it down and look for angles in an effort to provide the best answer.”
